Guide to Rigid Construction Sign Materials

Selecting the right substrate (backing material) is critical for the longevity of your project and your budget. Use this guide to choose the best material for your job site.

MaterialDurabilityBest Application
0.080" Solid AluminumExtreme (10+ Years)Permanent highways, long-term construction, government specs. Rust-proof and heavy-duty.
ACM (Aluminum Composite)High (5-7 Years)The industry standard for construction. Two sheets of aluminum bonded to a polyethylene core. Lightweight, rigid, and less scrap value (anti-theft).
Coroplast (Plastic)Short TermTemporary events, mowing crews, and short-duration utility work. Lightweight and economical.

Reflectivity Grades: HIP vs. Diamond Grade

We offer rigid signs in two primary reflective sheetings to meet MUTCD requirements:

  • High Intensity Prismatic (HIP): The standard for most general construction and road work zones. It provides excellent reflectivity at wide angles.
  • Diamond Grade (DG3): The highest level of reflectivity. Required for many Interstate/Highway projects and school zones where maximum visibility is mandated.

Common Rigid Sign Legends

We stock all standard MUTCD legends for immediate shipment. Popular options include:

  • Road Work Ahead: The first warning sign for any zone.
  • End Road Work: Marks the termination of the zone.
  • Road Closed: For full closures and detours.
  • Speed Limit Signs: Regulatory orange/black signs for work zone speeds.
  • Detour Signs: Directional arrows (M4-9 series) to guide traffic.
