DOT-C2 Compliance: Placement & Patterns

The FMCSA requires that all trailers 80 inches or wider and with a GVWR over 10,000 lbs must have retroreflective sheeting to enhance visibility. Here are the core standards:

  • The Pattern: Tape must be alternating red and white segments (typically 6" x 6" or 7" x 11") to provide high contrast against the vehicle's body and the environment.
  • Placement Guidelines: Reflective sheeting must cover at least 50% of the trailer's side length and 100% of the lower rear bar (the ICC bumper). It should also outline the upper rear corners (inverted "L" shape).
  • The Stamp: Always look for the "DOT-C2" certification mark stamped directly onto the tape. If it doesn't have the stamp, it does not meet federal compliance standards for highways.

Standard vs. DOT-C2: What is the Difference?

It is crucial to choose the correct tape for your specific application:

  • DOT-C2 Reflective Tape: This tape is engineered specifically for the transportation industry. It meets strict photometric requirements for brightness and retroreflectivity defined by the NHTSA and DOT. It is mandatory for commercial trailers.
  • Standard / Industrial Reflective Tape: While high quality, "Industrial" or "Engineer Grade" tapes may not meet the specific candela (brightness) requirements of the DOT. These are excellent for marking gates, bollards, dumpsters, forklifts, and non-regulated facility hazards.
