Choosing the Right MUTCD Type III Barricade
Type III Barricades (often written as Type 3) are the industry standard for road closures and high-visibility traffic control. Unlike smaller Type I or Type II barricades which are used for delineation, Type III barricades generally indicate a full road closure or a significant detour. At Traffic Safety Store, we offer two primary frame styles—Galvanized Steel and All-Plastic "Break-Away"—both of which are fully MUTCD compliant.
Steel Frame vs. Plastic Break-Away Uprights
When selecting your barricades, the primary decision is the frame material. Both options utilize our durable plastic horizontal rails, but the uprights serve different environments:
- Square Tube Steel Uprights: These feature hot-dipped galvanized steel frames. They are heavy-duty, rust-resistant, and designed for long-term durability. They are ideal for semi-permanent road closures where the barricade needs to withstand wind and weather without easily tipping over.
- Plastic "Break-Away" Uprights: These are designed with safety and portability in mind. In the event of a vehicle collision, the plastic uprights are engineered to break away, minimizing damage to the vehicle and injury to passengers. They also lay flat for easy stacking and transport in pickup trucks.
Understanding Reflective Sheeting Options
Per MUTCD regulations, Type 3 barricades must feature at least three horizontal rails with alternating orange and white retroreflective stripes. We offer two grades of sheeting depending on your local requirements:
- Engineer Grade (EG): The standard for parking lots, private communities, and low-speed construction zones.
- High Intensity Prismatic (HI): Offers significantly higher reflectivity and visibility at night. This is the standard requirement for most state DOT projects and public roadways.
Why We Use Plastic Rails Instead of Wood
Traditionally, Type III barricades used painted wood lumber. However, wood is heavy, rots over time, and requires constant repainting. Our 4', 6', and 8' plastic rails are hollow, lightweight, and reinforced. They do not warp or splinter, and the color is molded directly into the plastic, ensuring they look professional for years with zero maintenance.
Common Applications for Type 3 Barricades
Due to their size and high visibility, these barriers are used for:
- • Total Road Closures
- • Bridge Construction
- • Major Event Crowd Control
- • Highway Detours
- • Utility Work Zones
