Did you know that there are nearly 500,000 eye injuries in the United States?\u00a0 40% of hospital visits for eye injuries are sports related, and <a title=\"VSP\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vsp.com\/eye-injuries.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">70%<\/a> are caused by falling objects.\r\n\r\nAbout half of all eye injury victims are under the age of 25, and 90% of all eye injuries can be prevented. With all of these factors in play, it\u2019s important to know the steps you can take to ensure your eyes will be injury free.\r\n\r\nThere are plenty of things you can do at home to protect your vision that doesn\u2019t involve any protective headgear.\u00a0 Home cleaning agents cause a majority of eye injuries; so make sure you keep all of these items locked up and out of reach of children.\r\n\r\nWhen you\u2019re mowing your lawn, make sure your children are far away.\u00a0 You wouldn\u2019t want to run over a rock, have it slingshot out of the lawnmower, and into your son\u2019s face.\u00a0 Keep in mind that paper clips, rubber bands, wire coat hangers, elastic cords and fishing hooks can all cause eye injury as well.\u00a0 Your computer could also do some damage to your eyes.\r\n\r\nWhen using a computer, keep your screen within 20&#8243;-24&#8243; of your eyes and make sure the top of your computer screen is slightly below eye level.\u00a0 Minimize the distance between your computer screen and any documents you need to reference while working.\u00a0 That way, your eyes won\u2019t be adjusting as harshly.\u00a0 Be sure to take a break every 15 minutes to focus on a distant object, and blink frequently to ensure your vision stays healthy.\r\n\r\nYour diet can also help improve the longevity of your vision. Omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E can help keep your vision stronger longer. Green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, and collards are great for your eyes.\u00a0 Salmon, tuna, eggs, nuts, beans, oranges, and carrots are other eye friendly foods.\u00a0 If you\u2019re a smoker you\u2019re more likely to get cataracts, optic nerve damage, or macular degeneration. So here\u2019s a tip, don\u2019t smoke!\r\n\r\nProbably one of the most important places to make sure you\u2019re using proper eye protection is in high-risk work environments.\r\n\r\nSafety glasses are an important part of any workplace.\u00a0 For example, if you\u2019re working with any hazardous materials indoors you should use <a title=\"Clear Safety Glasses\" href=\"https:\/\/www.trafficsafetystore.com\/safety-glasses\/clear-glasses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">clear safety glasses<\/a> to ensure complete eye safety.\u00a0 You can wear these while working with lumber, batteries, or hazardous liquids.\u00a0 When working outside on a construction site, or manning a traffic redirection&#8211; there are safety glasses that also <a title=\"UV Protection\" href=\"https:\/\/www.trafficsafetystore.com\/safety-glasses\/flex-frame\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">provide UV protection<\/a>, making working outside easier <i>(and safer) <\/i>on your eyes.\r\n\r\nSports also play a big role in most eye injuries.\u00a0 More than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/newsroom\/release\/Sports-related-eye-injuries.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">100,000 eye injuries<\/a> in the United States each year are sports related.\u00a0 Every 13 minutes an emergency room in the U.S. treats a sports related injury.\u00a0 If you wear contact lenses, you should grab a pair of <a title=\"Sport Glasses\" href=\"https:\/\/www.trafficsafetystore.com\/safety-glasses\/sport-frame\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sport frame safety glasses<\/a> to give your eyes that added protection.\r\n\r\nYou should wear safety glasses if you\u2019re involved in any activity where your eyes could be susceptible to injury.
